Captions that don't sound like AI sludge

AI captions that could swap any brand name? Use a bad→better rewrite with product facts, sludge constraints, and approve-before-ship so your grid still sounds like you.

Illustration: sludge caption card rewritten into a short human product caption

Your calendar is empty. You paste a product URL into a caption tool. Out comes something that could sell anyone’s jar: “Excited to share our thoughtfully crafted formula designed to elevate your everyday ritual.” Nobody you know talks like that. The photo is fine. The words are sludge.

This page is the rewrite method — bad → better — with constraints that kill generic AI captions, then approve before anything ships. If the week itself is blank, start with how one person fills an empty ecommerce calendar. If you already have product photos and need post jobs, pair this with the photo → week map (draft topic; not live yet). Beauty operators can also borrow structure from the weekly plan for one skincare product.

Public caption primers still say the same floor: know the goal, be specific, match the brand (Shopify on Instagram captions; Buffer caption ideas; Hootsuite caption tips; Later caption ideas). Steal the floor. Do not paste their swipe file onto your grid.

What “AI sludge” actually looks like

Sludge is not “AI wrote it.” Sludge is a caption that fails a stranger test: swap your brand name for a competitor and the line still works.

Sludge tellWhy it failsFix
Excited / thrilled / honored with no factEnergy without productOpen with a noun from the label
Ritual / elevate / journey / transformativeCould be any SKUName the use: AM cleanse, Tuesday pasta, restock
Fake scarcityInventory is fine; trust diesOnly claim stock you can ship today
Paragraph essaysNobody reads them on mobileOne job, ≤3 short lines
Hashtag wallsNoise over meaning0–5 relevant tags, after the words

Five constraints that kill sludge

Before you rewrite, lock these. They are faster than “make it sound more human.”

  1. One product fact from the page (ingredient, size, process, price band, restock).
  2. One specific noun a customer would recognize (serum dropper, tomato lid, kiln shelf).
  3. Voice test: say it out loud. If you would not text it to a regular, cut it.
  4. No fake urgency unless inventory or the offer is real today.
  5. One job per caption: announce, explain, desire, trust, or shop — not all five.

That list is the whole framework. AI can draft. These constraints decide what survives.

The bad → better rewrite (four passes)

Do not ask the model for “better vibes.” Run four passes on the same draft:

PassQuestionAction
1 FactWhat is true on the product page?Keep one claim; delete the rest
2 NounWhat object is in the photo?Name it in the first line
3 CutWould I say this out loud?Delete ritual / elevate / journey
4 JobAnnounce / explain / desire / trust / shop?One job; one optional CTA

Template (fill, then rewrite in your mouth):

[Specific noun]. [One product fact]. [Optional honest CTA].

Examples of seeds that stay human:

  • “New jar. Same Tuesday night pasta.”
  • “Dropper first. Then moisturizer. That’s the order.”
  • “Ladled, sealed, labeled. Then it leaves.”
  • “Two sizes. Same recipe. Stock is real.”

Kill list (delete on sight):

  • “Excited to announce…” with no product fact
  • “Thoughtfully crafted for the modern [anyone]”
  • “Elevate your [ritual] today”
  • Long AI essays you would not say out loud
  • Scarcity lines when the shelf is full

Worked example (hypothetical beauty serum)

Hypothetical (not a customer story): you sell “Clear Morning,” a 30 ml niacinamide serum. Photo is a clean bottle hero on rice-paper backdrop. First AI draft:

Excited to share our thoughtfully crafted Clear Morning serum, designed to elevate your skincare ritual and transform your glow journey. Limited stock — shop now!

That fails every constraint: no usable fact beyond the name, fake urgency, essay tone, multi-job CTA.

Better (explain job, voice-tested):

Clear Morning, 30 ml. Niacinamide for the AM pass after cleanse. No ritual speech — dropper, then moisturizer.

LinePass check
Clear Morning, 30 mlNoun + size from the page
Niacinamide for the AM pass after cleanseOne fact, one job (explain)
No ritual speech — dropper, then moisturizerVoice test; kills sludge words

Specialty food version of the same method: announce the jar, explain one lid/ingredient fact, or trust with a real packing line — same four passes. Do not invent lifestyle filler to sound “premium.”

Approve before anything ships

Method first. Tool second.

  1. Draft from product facts (AI ok for a first pass).
  2. Run the four passes + five constraints.
  3. Read the caption next to the real photo.
  4. Ask: would a regular customer believe this tomorrow?
  5. Approve. Then schedule. Do not skip approve.

Owner-run shops in our ecommerce brands lane need drafts waiting for a human yes — not autopost sludge. If you want calendar drafts from your Business DNA that still need your yes before they go live, start in Youanai Social. AI can draft. You still make the call. Blog → social? Use Repurpose for URL-first workflows; this page is caption taste after you already have a post job.

FAQ

How do I make AI captions sound less like AI?

Feed product-page facts, force a specific noun, cut ritual/elevate language, pick one job, then approve. Prompting “sound more human” without constraints usually makes longer sludge.

Should I use an AI Instagram caption generator?

For a first draft, yes if you are empty. For the final caption, no autopost. Public idea banks and generators are floors (Buffer; Shopify). Your approve step is the product.

How long should an ecommerce Instagram caption be?

Short enough that you would text it. One to three short lines beats a paragraph. Add a CTA only when the job is shop and the claim is true.

Can I reuse the same caption template for every SKU?

Reuse the passes, not the sentence. Swap the noun and the fact. Identical captions across five SKUs is sludge with a find-and-replace.

What’s the difference between a caption seed and a finished caption?

A seed is a one-line job fill (“New jar. Same Tuesday night pasta.”). A finished caption is voice-tested, constraint-checked, and approved next to the photo.
